Karl Lagerfeld Defends Fur, Talks Selfies

Last week Karl Lagerfeld announced at Milan Fashion Week that he is designing a ‘haute fourrure’ or couture fur for fur-centric brand, Fendi. The collection will be made for the July Paris Haute Couture Week. With this decision he has not only taken on the designs, but been put on the defensive as to his pro-fur position.

Lagerfeld understands that fur is a dangerous topic in fashion for a good reason and should be approached gently. He also understands that fur isn’t just a lavish accessory for consumers, but also an American industry that employs thousands.

«Who will pay for all the unemployment of the people if you suppress the industry of the fur? The hunters in the north for the sable, they have no other job, there is nothing else to do. Those organizations who are much against it, they are not Bill Gates,” Lager said to The New York Times.

The designer said that he never looks back, only forward and doesn’t even keep a catalogue of his own previous works. “In Germany, they made a huge exhibition of everything I did, Fendi, Chanel, Lagerfeld, Chloé and all that. I’m not even going to the show.”

His opinion on selfies: they’re a huge no-no. They are such a problem for him that he cannot walk on the public streets any more in an effort to combat showing up in someones selfie.

The mad designer doesn’t have plans on surrendering to retirement any time soon, so expect much more in the future from one of fashion’s most creative and controversial.

America’s Next Top Model Contestant Found Dead, Where Are the Rest Now?

Following the tragic death of America’s Next Top Model contestant Mirjana Puhar, the world has been wondering: What actually happens to ANTM contestants, and where are they now?

After Mirjana Puhar’s passing, the show has come under fire for what happens to its contestants after their short lived stardom. Mirjana was shot dead earlier this week in a triple homicide, but unfortunately, the tragedy doesn’t stop there. Cycle 8 contestant, Renee Alway was arrested after a six hour pursuit by police in 2013 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. According to AOL, Alway, “[…] pled guilty to four counts of felony burglary, one count of vehicle theft, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and a misdemeanor count of identity theft.”

Use of drugs and admittance to rehab has also been reported about former ANTM contestants. Lisa D’Amato of Cycle 5 publically checked into rehab on the Dr.Drew show, while Jael Strauss of Cycle 8 had a meth and cocaine addiction that caused her to become homeless. Jael also took to stripping for money while Cycle 14 contestant Angelea Preston worked as a paid escort and, consequently, got booted off the show.

This revealing news about former ANTM contestants has led viewers to wonder if the false sense of glamour and promise of industry recognition is actually damaging to the contestants’ mental and physical healths. Beyond that, do America’s next ‘top model’ even make it in the industry?

According to CariDee English, who took home the ‘Top Model’ title in Cycle 7, wrote, “The fashion industry had NO idea how to market us…Even though we just were named ‘TOP’ our place in line at Fashion World was at the bottom. The industry many times didn’t care about our name, but did turn a snobby cheek to the name ANTM,” in a comment.

Tyra Banks, host and creator of America’s Next Top Model, said that she is ‘deeply saddened’ by Mirjana’s death but has not made any further comment on life for contestants after the show.

Girls and Guns on the Indianapolis Runway

In Indianapolis, USA there is a growing number of women carrying firearms and the holsters, purses, and gun concealing accessories are, unfortunately, not catered toward women. Amy Seitz has set her sights on remedying the situation with a new brand of feminine weapon concealing bras, corsets and purses. Now women won’t have to sacrifice fashion for firepower.

Guns have long been a source of inspiration and play for designers––like Karl Lagerfeld’s ‘Miami Vice’ pistol heel circa 2009––and Seitz is now taking that inspiration to a whole new level.

Seitz explained that after her gun toting purse broke, she was forced to shop for a new one at her local gun shop, but found the choices to be uninspired and ugly. “That’s why I started this company,” she said to Indy Star. «A woman has to see it. They’ve got to feel it, maneuver it and see if it’s going to fit.» She went on to explain that every woman is different and needs to find the right method of carrying their weapon of choice.

The show is sponsored by Well Armed Women, an organization that supports, trains, and teaches women the proper way to carry, fire, and conceal weapons to keep them out of harms way. The runway show is locked and loaded for this Saturday at The Crane Bay.

Fashion, Tech, and Sex Toys: Meet the New Wearable Vibrator

The world’s biggest and best Fashion Tech Week has just come to a close in San Francisco, CA., otherwise known as one of the biggest tech hubs in the world. At the event were countless innovations in wearables and numerous inspirational speeches about technology, fashion, and the future. Some of the most peculiar––and wearable––items were of the risque variety.

The Crave necklace vibrator.

One of the most talked about items at the show was a necklace that doubled as a vibrator. The wearable was created by Crave, a company based out of San Francisco, and is in the shape of an innocent tear drop.

The Daily Californian spoke with Tamara Samoylova, head of research at Deloitte Center for the Edge, which helps business and tech companies profit from opportunities, who said she can imagine a day when people will pay to enter stores. “If you look at brick-and-mortar sales, they are declining, and online sales are increasing,” Samoylova said, adding that retailers will begin creating new store experiences to intrigue clientele to visit. She believes future customers will pay for an original interactive retail experience.

It’s not likely that the capital of technology could ever compete with traditional fashion weeks, but with their lead in wearables, continued partnerships between the two industries can be expected.

America’s Next Top Model Mirjana Puhar Murdered

America’s Next Top Model star Mirjana Puhar was found murdered in a residential home in Charlotte, North Carolina on Tuesday. She, along with boyfriend of just a few months, Jonathan Alvarado, and friend Jusmar Gonzaga-Garcia were found by a friend after gunshots were heard. Later in the afternoon, 19-year-old Emmanuel Jesus Rangel, a friend of Jonathan Alvarado, was arrested and charged with 3 counts of 1st degree murder. Law enforcement sources tell us the preliminary investigation leads police to believe the murders were drug related.

Kendall Jenner Too Sick for Milan Fashion Week

It’s been a rough week for Kendall Jenner. After fellow runway models Binx Walton and Lexi Boling ganged up on Kendall Jenner on social media, Kendall took to Twitter to tell the world that she was too sick to walk for Milan Fashion Week. Kendall has been on the go since New York Fashion Week, walking in a total of 9 shows, where she then moved on to London and Milan.

After arriving in Milan, Kendall walked the runway for Fendi and No21 before disappearing from the public eye. Kendall tweeted about her absence, “thank you to all the Drs. for getting me better so I can go to Paris now and continue fashion month. sad I had to miss the rest of Milan.”

After jet-setting from fashion week to fashion week and dealing with her catty peers, it’s no wonder that the 19-year-old model and TV personality fell ill.

We wish Kendall Jenner a quick recovery and look forward to seeing her in Paris.

Designer to Watch: Phoenix Keating from Australia

Back in 2009 Phoenix Keating got his first taste of success when Lady Gaga’s stylist’s noticed his debut collection. By the time his second collection arrived, Gaga was wearing two of the pieces in her impromptu show in Sydney, Australia, which brought his brand to an international relevance.

Following this success, Keating was invited to show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia in 2012, where he was nominated for a Woolworth award. Keating became the youngest designer nominated since Karl Lagerfeld (21 at the time) and Yves Saint Laurent (18 at the time) in 1954.

Keating said about preparing for shows, “Before a show I am extremely busy. There isn’t much time to think, let alone mentally prepare. However it’s a case of constantly remembering to stay calm and go with the flow. There are many hurdles to get over and personally it’s a case of letting the problems wash over you while figuring out how to solve them. I developed stress-induced psoriasis from these things so I have learned to calm down and go at my own speed.”

In October 2014, Phoenix held a small press showing in New York City to rave reviews, boosting his popularity and visibility on the radar. Keating is now set to show in Sydney in April, with rumors of showing in New York in September.
