12 Days of Valentine’s: Best Galentine’s Ever!

We’re officially halfway through our 12 Days of Valentine’s special, and today I’m thinking of all of you single ladies out there. Amidst all the roses and lovebirds, its easy for single girls to feel isolated on Valentine’s Day. If year after year you find yourself cursing couples under your breath or cuddling with Netflix on the 14th, then this article is for you.

For those of you who aren’t in the know, Galentine’s Day is unofficially-officially February 13. First made popular by Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) on the hit TV series Parks and Recreation, Galentine’s is a day dedicated to celebrating all of the single ladies in your life, and according to ABC its becoming more and more popular every year. So gather up your single gal pals and show them how much you love them by hosting the best Galentine’s party of the year.

Girls Night In:

Just because you don’t have a significant other doesn’t mean that you can’t throw on some sexy lingerie. Invite all of your girlfriends to wear their lacy best and treat them to a girls night in they won’t forget. Face masks, nail polish, and champagne are obvious musts. If champagne isn’t your thing, hosting a wine tasting is another option. Start the evening with an elegant charcuterie arrangement and finish with decadent desserts. Have a few activities planned like a nail art DIY or a drinking game––we’re partial to this Gossip Girl one.

Girls Night Out:

Not just any girls night out, a Galentine’s girls night out. Start the night by inviting your besties to get ready at your place––and by get ready, I mean go all out. Dress to the nines and do each other’s hair and makeup so that even Cupid would fall head over heels for you. Pregaming is completely necessary, so pop some rosé and celebrate the fact that you’re single and surrounded by your BFFLs. Maybe throw in some heart-shaped jello shots for good measure. Have a list of 3-5 bars to go to and end the night at your favorite club. Dance the night away and have fun making all the boys swoon, but remember, don’t abandon your girls!

Jennifer Lawrence Strips Down For Vanity Fair

Remember the iconic 1981 photo of Nastassja Kinski for Vogue? If you haven’t been born yet at the time, you probably didn’t know that it would later become one of the most coveted posters for 80s teens. It would also inspire other celebrities to get in bed––figuratively, of course––with these not-so-friendly reptiles for photo shoots or performances. Remember Britney Spears with that albino python? Vogue’s iconic image was shot by no less than photography legend, Richard Avedon, whose work has “helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century,” according to the New York Times. Now, another legend has recreated the image for Vanity Fair. Patrick Demarchelier shot Hollywood’s newest “It” girl, Jennifer Lawrence wearing nothing but a red-tailed boa constrictor.

The image was taken in a house in Hollywood Hills, with snake handlers on standby. However, Jennifer’s expression on the photo shows that she could probably charm the snake all on her own. The shoot was styled by Vanity Fair’s Jessica Diehl, who said that Jennifer had “the perfect combination of strength, sexuality, and humor, and, above all, tomboy to pull this off.” I’m sure that comes as no surprise to JLaw fans, who know the actress to be a cool, funny and completely badass. She stayed cool during the shoot, and gave Vanity Fair a beautiful fashion image. I’m sure Nastassja Kinski and the late great Robert Avedon would agree.

Light Up Your Lingerie this Valentine’s with Chromat

If you’ve visited the Cloud Couture exhibit at the Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator’s Pratt Institute, you know that your jacket is now capable of giving you street directions. You probably found out that you can now find your bra in the dark, as well. One of the most exciting developments in recent fashion history is the rise of wearable technology. Chips can now be embedded in clothing to provide information instantly, and fabrics can now be pulled out of thin air through 3D printing. Also, embellishments have taken on a new meaning, with LED lights joining the ranks of beads and sequins. Chromat is one of the most exciting innovators in the field of wearable technology––and the LED-lit bra is just the tip of the iceberg.

Chromat aptly calls its designs: Structural Experiments for the Human Body. Head designer, Becca McCharen uses her background in architecture and urban designs to create clothing that are more like “wearable exoskeletons.” For FW14, Chromat threw in technology into the mix and created its “Bionic Bodies” collection. Programmed LED lights were integral parts of the collection, which told the story of a person being consumed by her screen. Smartphone obsession, perhaps? Chromat showed the Bionic Bodies collection in last year’s FW fashion show, and now key pieces are displayed at the Pratt Institute. For SS15, Chromat has decided to manufacture fabric through 3D printing. They have also made use of embedded activity tracking devices with the help of Misfit Wearables. Since Chromat featured many of their designs on Instagram for fans to enjoy, we’ve decided to feature some of their best designs. Take a look at Chromat’s innovative designs in the gallery above.

The Philippines Announce Headliners for London Fashion Week’s International Fashion Showcase

The British Council and the British Fashion Council’s International Fashion Showcase are coming! The event runs in parallel with London Fashion Week and its aim is to promote talented and aspiring fashion designers from participating countries, embassies and cultural institutions.

The Philippines has been declared as the country to watch for and this year six rising star talents will showcase their AW15 collections. The collections are inspired by the tales and mythical creatures that are found in Filipino folklore.

The Philippines is renowned for producing world class fashion designers, many of whom have received international recognition and celebrity status. This list include Monique Lhuillier, Josie Natori, Mich Dulce and Michael Cinco.

Meet the Designers!

Jaggy Glarino

Jaggy is known for his intuitive approach to design and expert draping. On inspirations Jaggy says that he is inspired by ”Anything that affects or moves me. It could be an art form, a random object, music, a mood, practically anything! I have always thought that ‘getting-inspired’ is an organic process and more often than not, it comes from things that you have the least interest in and at times when you least expect it.”

John Herrera

John practices maximalist layering that stems from dramatic, far-reaching inspirations. He says, “I am both a technical and artistic designer. I make the patterns for every dress I create. Anyone can make a dress, but the magic lies in the skilled hands of the patternmaker. I believe in Philippine arts and artistry in design and I want to be a proponent in finding a distinctive Filipino voice in the fashion world. I support a community weavers of local indigenous materials such as jusi (banana fiber), pina seda (pineapple silk) and silk cocoon. I have a strong point of view anchored by my obsession with detail.”

Michelline Syjuco

Michelle is known for her boundary-pushing use of unconventional materials and comes from an exciting background. Michelline says “I started designing accessories and outfits for my band in the 90s. We were the youngest commercially signed alternative band in the Philippines at that time, and I created all the costumes and props that we used for our television and live performances. I was born into a family of artists. My parents are considered the primary proponents of experimental art in the Philippines, so I was exposed to unconventional forms of creating art ever since I was a young child. When I create, I do not see any limitations, only possibilities.”

Renan Pacson

Renan specializes in highly detailed outerwear and firmly believes that the devil is in the details. “Working in haute couture retail taught me that nothing is impossible in regards to creating. I always try to incorporate local fibers into my pieces and I am continuously innovating how I can use our local fibers and turn them into something that could be part of a daily wardrobe. I’m inspired by the whole process of creating, of turning ideas and concepts into tangible, wearable pieces.”

Tony Evan

Tony portrays a unique sense of artistry through his use of lines and seam placement and his creations almost have an otherworldly feel. “I have a very inquisitive mind. I see normal objects and I’m always trying to figure out how they work, how they’re made. There is also that element of escapism. I see a lot of the abstract elements of design like balance, continuity and relation. I’m inspired by religious images, specifically Lenten processions. There is intention behind everything I put out. I don’t add things just because they look good, I put them there because they add depth, character, or it leads the viewer to how I want them to perceive me and my work. It sounds a little manipulative but that’s the purpose of design, to make you think.”

Ken Samudio

Ken is known for his hyper-tactile jewellery and accessories. Nodding to the underwater world, it is no surprise that Ken is a marine biologist. “I try to reference my background as a staunch supporter of the environment and it is evident and ever-present in my collection. I push myself through innovation in design and a constant need to be relevant. My work is a mix of old world handicraft techniques and utilizing pioneering and environmentally sustainable materials.” Already courted by the media, Ken was featured in Vogue Talent for accessories in 2014. “I started my business with a capsule collection of headpieces and before I knew it, a famous celebrity bought the entire collection. Magazine features, fashion shows and retailers soon followed suit and the rest, as they say, is history.”

The International Fashion Showcase is taking place from the 19th to the 24th of February 2015 at the Brewer Street Car Park, Brewer Street, London W1F 0LA. It is open to trade, as well as to the public.

For more details, visit the British Council micro site dedicated to the Philippines.

The Centre for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) of the Department of Trade and Industry, The Philippine Embassy in London and the Philippine Trade and Investment Centre (PTIC) support the Philippine participation at the 2015 IFS.

Fashion Police Arrest Jimmy Fallon and Saved By the Bell Cast

If there’s anything we learned from yesterday’s Saved By the Bell reunion, it’s that their style is in desperate need of an update. There were some pretty cringe-worthy style moments on Wednesday’s The Tonight Show––thanks, Jimmy Fallon. However, the short trip down memory lane was very much appreciated. It was incredible to see Zack, Slater, Jesse, Kelly, and Mr. Belding come back to Bayside to take us all the way back to the 90s. The gang performed a skit on The Tonight Show, where they met up with a “new” friend, Jimmy Fallon––an aspiring comedian who dreams of dating Nicole Kidman. I see what you did there, Jimmy.

The skit was a mix of Saved By the Bell throwback humor, and references to their lives after the show. I’m sure anybody who grew up in the 90s enjoyed watching the Bayside reunion…as long as they weren’t too distracted by Jesse’s big hair. The skit was a reminder of simpler days past, as well as of the unbelievably garish outfits we used to wear. Therefore, it is only fitting that we give the crew a few style updates to take them to 2015.

Judging from yesterday’s skit, iPhones are definitely at the top of the list. Check out our gallery to see how to do Saved By the Bell’s style––right.

Did Rihanna Get Eaten by a Shark?!

Featured Video

Are sharks 2015’s next big thing? Katy Perry had Left (and Right) shark during the Super Bowl, so why not RiRi? Rihanna made Perry’s efforts seem laughable, however, with three very real, man-eating sharks. For what, you ask? Fashion, of course!

For Harper’s Bazaar’s March 2015 issue, the style icon starred in a photoshoot with Florida Aquarium’s resident sand tiger sharks. The shoot took place in December, and had Rihanna swimming in various designer swimsuits in the shark tank. Who worries about giant predators when they’re wearing Chanel, right? The stunning underwater spread also celebrates the 40-year anniversary of the iconic film, Jaws.

It’s only fitting that Rihanna was chosen to pay homage to the movie. She proclaimed director Steven Spielberg as her childhood hero in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. Although she admitted that the Jaws movies scared her away from the water as a child, she still couldn’t help but watch all of them. It seems that Rihanna has had a lot of practice facing her fears since childhood.

“I think I’m like most people—we fear the unknown and the things that have yet to come to pass, which are the very things that don’t deserve to be feared. When you give God complete control, it’s very hard not to be fearless,” says Rihanna.

Apart from, swimming with sharks, Rihanna also shows her fearlessness on the red carpet. She actually considers the headline-making Adam Selman gown she wore at the 2014 CFDA Awards as one of her favorites. When asked whether she set a limit as to what she would wear in public, our favorite badgal replied, “I don’t like to commit to those kind of rules. You never know.” That’s why we love you, RiRi!

9-Year-Old Chinese Model at Paris Fashion Week Raises Eyebrows

Featured Video

Paris Fashion week saw China’s youngest child model hit the catwalk for her second tour of haute couture. Xiu Qiu is 9-years-old and being praised for her poise and grace in the face of hundreds of cameras and onlookers. She walked in Laurence Xu’s show for the second time, but her relation to Xu is unknown.

Watch our series on Mini Models here.

In the Chinese media, Xu is being accused of nepotism among other scandalous headlines. Xu has become a huge success in China after dressing mega star, Fan Bing Bing, at Cannes with a stunning one shouldered gown. He was also the only Chinese designer invited by Chambre Syndicale to participate in the Paris Haute Couture shows.

The child-bride vibes ran rampant at the end of the show when Xu and Qui––who was wearing an off white brocade gown––walked hand-in-hand down the runway. However, in China, brides normally wear red while white is reserved for mourning. It’s unlikely Xu had any notion of wedding bells as he took his final bow.

Natalie Portman Destroys Wedding in Dior

A custom made Dior bridal gown is more than enough to keep most ladies happy, but it appears that it simply wasn’t enough for Natalie Portman. Natalie stars in the new short film for Miss Dior, where she looks absolutely stunning in a lace, floor length Dior bridal dress. The actress makes it all the way to the altar, where she abruptly abandons her groom with nothing but an “I’m sorry.”

The short was directed by Anton Corbijn, who is most known for his films Control and The American. The film shows ‘Miss’ Natalie leaving her to-be, never-will-be, husband––who apparently could care less as he doesn’t even turn his head. Natalie is then whisked off in a helicopter with a mysterious––and gorgeous––model in true Hollywood fashion.

In real life, Natalie Portman remains happily married with Benjamin Millepied. Count your blessings Benjamin!
