Rich Velvets and Paisley Illusions at the Etro Menswear Show

Luxury Italian fashion house Etro unveiled their menswear autumn/winter 2015 collection in Milan.

The models walked out to a backdrop of grandeur with elaborate rooms and exotic animals on the screen behind them. The collection featured sophisticated suits in rich velvets and silks in shades of chocolate and caramel browns, with mustard and orange hues giving an early 70s retro feel and incorporating the brands trademark paisley pattern and poetic approach to fashion.

Fashion One spoke to creative director Kean Etro about the collection, the process and his thoughts on menswear in general. The designer describes the faded out swirling patterns on the garments as an illusion, something that appears and disappears and seems to travel across the clothes like ocean waves. The beautiful prints were hand painted using techniques from Venice opening up new possibilities in the realm of made to measure design. Etro also spoke to us about revisiting styles and making new hybrids with innovative stitching techniques.

The silhouette was different from a lot of the tighter menswear cuts of other designers in recent years, and this was another point of interest for Mr Etro who recognized his almost pajama style trousers and looser jackets created a more classic voluminous shape. Talking about the strengths of Etro and Italian design, he thinks that Italy has a wealth of artists and academies, giving them the ability to export painters, designers, tailors and creativity rather than compete in technology.

Moves Like…Georgia May Jagger: Model, Muse, One to Watch

Featured Video

Georgia May Jagger was born to be a star. Literally. Her parents are Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Jerry Hall, supermodel and actress extraordinaire. It’s no wonder that the daughter of these two stars is making headlines in her own right. Georgia May is this season’s Mulberry girl, Thierry Mugler’s new muse, and the star of Sonia Rykiel’s latest ad campaign.

In her latest campaign with Mulberry, Jagger rocks a mini skirt and this season’s favorite hairstyle, voluminous boho waves. Jagger is also Thierry Mugler’s latest muse for the brand’s spring fragrance ‘Angel’, and landed in headlines for partying with her mother at an event celebrating the fragrance.

Watch Mulberry’s Spring/Summer 2015 campaign video below:

Gossip aside, it is clear that Georgia May Jagger is unstoppable. In the last year alone the model and socialite has collaborated with Vogue, H&M, and Rimmel and it seems that she will be an industry favorite this year too. Known for her signature pout and drop dead gorgeous looks, Jagger’s eclectic sense of style is often overlooked. We’ve taken notice, however, and love her bohemian looks with an inimitable rockstar edge.

MADE Gives New York Fashion Week A Much Needed Facelift

Featured Video

Change seems to be the hottest trend in fashion for 2015––and New York Fashion Week is the next to undergo a big overhaul. While it has been known since December that NYFW will be leaving the legendary Lincoln Center for good, nothing was said about it’s new home. Now, WME-IMG, the company responsible for NYFW, has announced that it will acquire MADE Fashion Week. Hosted by Milk Studios, MADE Fashion Week is the streetwear equivalent of NYFW’s high end fashion. MFW is a fresher, younger celebration of fashion––famously giving a leg up to highly talented designers like Joseph Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang. Considering this year’s trends, NYFW has found a very fitting new home.

Jeremy Scott and Miley Cyrus at MADE Fashion Week

MADE Fashion Week’s co-founder and co-owner Keith Baptista says that fashion editors and fans are calling for an updated and more authentic fashion experience, which they could no longer get in New York. This is where MADE comes in. Famous for putting a premium on creativity and talent over commercial gain, it is bound to add a gritty new side to NYFW. The question now, however, is whether MADE Fashion Week will become as commercialized and profit-driven––and therefore, stale––as NYFW? Without MADE, where will young designers go for free makeup and show space?

MADE’s owners Baptista, Jenné Lombardo and Mazdack Rassi insist that the team will still promote the “creative hub” at MADE and will use its newfound resources from WME-IMG to finance more shows globally. It seems that with NYFW’s move, more opportunities will be provided for newbie designers to make their debut into the industry. For NYFW, on the other hand, MADE is sure to completely reinvent it and give it a face that we’ve never seen at Lincoln Center.

The British Are Coming…to Hollywood! British Stars Take Over Vanity Fair

Featured Video

Annie Leibovitz shot Vanity Fair’s March cover for the magazine’s 21st Hollywood Issue with an old-school Hollywood look. Upon closer examination, however, the photo is cluttered with British stars including: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sienna Miller.

Redmayne is nominated for an Oscar for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Redmayne’s co-star, Felicity Jones, is also up for Best Actress in the same film. Cumberbatch is nominated for Best Actor for his leading role in The Imitation Game. The Americans’ are certainly up against some tough competition this year at the Oscars.

Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter said in the issue’s letter: ‘We would have needed two issues to fully capture the breadth and strength of the British invasion. These are the people who invented the English language after all, and at no time does it come so alive as when they are speaking it. They certainly do better American accents than U.S. actors do British ones.’

Annie Leibovitz has photographed every Hollywood Issue cover, but three, since the first issue in 1995. The new issue will be available in digital editions and on national newsstands on February 5.

12 Days of Valentine’s: Flowers According to Paris Couture

Designers showed that flowers are still the language of love at Haute Couture Week and with Valentines Day on the horizon, Fashion One is talking floriography for day two of our 12 Days of Valentine’s Special. Each flower has it’s own language and it’s integral to choose the right flower for the right date. Whether you are in a serious relationship, married, or casually dating, we’ve got the right flower for you.

Lavender:

Lavender stands for solitude and admiration, making this the perfect flower for the independent woman who doesn’t like surprises or anything too fancy. Keep lavender in mind for the people in your life that you respect and are grateful for.

Roses:

Roses signify love, but each color conveys a different type––so choose wisely. Red roses mean pure love, while white stands for innocence and secrecy. Yellow roses are beautiful but stand for friendship, so watch out!

Hibiscus:

Hibiscus are often thought of as the flower of Hawaii, but it’s significance comes from its meaning of memory. These flowers say, ‘remember the good times’ to your other half. This is the perfect flower to choose to accompany a photo album of memories with the love of your life.

Tulips:

A single red tulip is a declaration of love and should be given to show dedication. A yellow tulip lets your significant other know that you see their smile as a ray of sunshine. Tulips are playful and lighthearted, so stay away from them if you are trying to make a bold statement.

Orchids:

Orchids have many meanings, but they are most known for representing beauty and refinement. They are often found miraculously growing in extreme conditions in the wilderness. Give an orchid to let your loved one know that despite the world around you, your love is still beautiful.

10 Best Dresses from Paris Couture Week

It’s springtime in Paris––at least on the runways. The last week of January was an explosion of color and flowers. All manner of blooms enchanted couture fans, from the daintiest appliques to Viktor & Rolf’s branches and Stephane Rolland’s voluminous rose gown. All of the shows spoke of the coming spring, and it is as clear as Valentino’s writing on the wall…or, should I say, dress. This year’s Paris Couture Week also boasted of new ways to bare skin. Plunging necks and backs are not enough, apparently. Mesh is the new silk, as it pretends to cover while making the imagination run wild.

It is also clear that the story isn’t always about volume. Dresses were made to cling to bodies, celebrating its curves. New lines were invented to flatter the figure, as seen in Versace’s sheer cutouts and Raf Simons’ graphic prints. Paris showed everything new, sleek and exciting.

Though every show was spectacular in their own rights, we’ve narrowed it down to the 10 best dresses from couture week. See our favorites in the gallery above.

Tom Ford on Geopolitics and Conquering the Fashion Industry

Featured Video

On Monday night, Tom Ford spoke with CNBC about his growing empire and how the fashion world is collectively being affected by the global economy and political tensions in Russia and the Middle East.

Ford said to CNBC that while China is still a «very important market,» the brand also had a «terrific customer base» in the Middle East. The company is also looking to South America and Africa’s «powerful luxury consumer base» as it flourishes.

Tom Ford in November of 2014.

Ford is no newcomer to global marketing and economics. Before starting his own brand, he helped Gucci, as their creative director, bring sales from $320 million in 1994 to almost $3 billion in 2003. He understands how to maneuver over the ups and downs of geopolitics and economics.

«The interesting thing is that our Russian customers are not travelling as much. So our Russian customers are not spending as much in Milan, they’re not spending as much in London, they’re not spending as much in Los Angeles. But in Russia our sales have gone up. So…they’re staying home, they’re shopping in Russia. It’s very interesting,” Mr. Ford says about how the sanctions placed on Russia have affected sales at his company. «We’re in the process of growing (so) we’re not as exposed as some of the luxury brands because we don’t have as many stores,» he said to CNBC.

Tom Ford currently has over 100 stores worldwide and is on a steady incline. The latest planned store openings this year are domestic––Miami, Houston and Atlanta––and reflect a thriving American economy.

Katy Perry’s Halftime Show Turned Runway for Jeremy Scott

In true Super Bowl fashion––pun intended––Katy Perry’s extravagant halftime show was a sight to behold. Not only were her costumes definitively Jeremy Scott, the production itself was a marvel in technology. From the moment Katy entered atop a gigantic walking, and Roar-ing beast, I knew I was in for a show. What followed was a psychedelic series of moments that included a 3D stage, dancing sharks, and Lenny Kravitz singing “I Kissed A Girl.”

The Super Bowl halftime show is, traditionally, one of the most anticipated events in sports––boasting of performances by stars like Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Paul McCartney, and Madonna. Katy Perry didn’t disappoint, showing that she was a performer dynamic enough to hold the football-hungry crowd’s attention for 13 minutes. Her energy on stage was also quite entertaining, especially when she almost had a Miley Cyrus-Robin Thicke moment with Lenny Kravitz. Satire? I believe so. Her flawless performance was matched only by her surprisingly good quick-change ability. This meant that we got to see more of Jeremy Scott’s fabulously gaudy costumes––which, along with Missy Elliott “getting her freak on,” were my favorite parts of the show.
