What to Watch: Fashion Meets Football

Featuring Super Bowl Fashion Commercials from H&M, Victoria’s Secret and Teleflora

In the spirit of the Super Bowl, this week’s films feature three of the most fashionable Super Bowl commercials shown in recent history. This week’s videos show Adriana Lima in sexy Louboutins, Victoria’s Secret Angels “in the mood for love,” and David Beckham baring everything for H&M. Clearly, these videos were meant for the more fashion-conscious football fans. Check out this week’s fashion films for a stylish Super Bowl Sunday.

Adriana Lima for Teleflora, 2012

Adriana gets ready for a hot Valentine’s date in this commercial for Teleflora. Teleflora skillfully catches the predominantly male Super Bowl crowd’s attention with this video of Adriana slipping into her little black dress and stilettos. Then, Adriana turns back and delivers the message––give your girls some flowers for Valentine’s Day. Well played, Teleflora.

David Beckham for H&M, 2014

H&M reminds everyone why it’s never a good idea to play hooky while you’re in the middle of a photo shoot––especially if you’re shooting an underwear commercial. However, in a terrific show of professionalism, David Beckham exerts 100 percent effort to make it back to the set. H&M’s video will drive you to the edge of your seats as you wonder what other piece of clothing David is about to lose.

Victoria’s Secret Official Commercial, 2015

In this video Victoria’s Secret Angels Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss, Behati Prinsloo, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Adriana Lima show off their VS lingerie as Brenda Lee croons “In the Mood for Love” in the background. The film gives a not so subtle reminder of what “magic” comes in those bright, pink Victoria’s Secret shopping bags.

I Knew She Was Trouble…Is Taylor Swift a DRAMA Queen?

It seems like Taylor Swift just couldn’t bare to stay out of the spotlight this week, though she had no problem baring parts of her body.

The week started with the internet abuzz over the pop star’s belly button, and ends with the question: is Taylor Swift starved for attention? Following the mysterious midriff reveal, a hacker threatened to release her nudes. Her spotlight was almost stolen by her BFF and supermodel Karlie Kloss, when the model had a runway nip slip at Versace, but Swift quickly reclaimed headlines by responding––in a very non-southern belle like fashion. Swift retaliated and made fun of hackers, tweeting “PS any hackers saying they have ‘nudes’? Psssh you’d love that wouldn’t you!” and “Cause the hackers gonna hack, hack, hack, hack, hack…”.

Nudes and belly buttons weren’t all for Taylor this week, however. Swifties everywhere groaned after Taylor announced that she had trademarked the catchiest phrases from her hit singles. According to CNN, phrases that have been trademarked include “This Sick Beat”, “Party Like It’s 1989”, and “Cause We Never Go Out of Style”––really Taylor? Now what will Swifties embroider and print on t-shirts?

The drama continues. As if all of that wasn’t enough, Taylor’s feud with popstar and Super Bowl headliner Katy Perry was also reignited this week. Taylor referred to Katy as a, “straight up enemy” back in September and the rivalry has been ongoing since. The ‘Teenage Dream’ singer told Billboard this week, “If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it” in reference to Taylor, according to Daily News.

As images of Taylor’s navel––and news of no nudes––continue to surface a week later, I can’t help but wonder: What’s next for this pop star? As a celebrity known for her good girl charm, both in her music and in her style, this week in drama seems to be uncharacteristic of the “I Knew You Were Trouble” singer.

Is Taylor Swift tired of being the girl next door, or is she finally letting the limelight get to her? Whatever the reason, I hope that this sudden cry for attention will at least translate to her style. I want less Safe and Sound and more Britney Spears’ Toxic––I’m tired of playsuits and covered midriffs.

GQ’s Editor Dylan Jones on the Booming Menswear Industry

When The Industry announced the formidable editor of British GQ, Dylan Jones, as 2015’s first guest of honour, the attendee list for the meeting at the Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design was filled immediately. Not only is he the brains behind Britain’s most renowned men’s magazine, but he’s also the chairman of London Collections: Men––and with men’s fashion week neatly wrapped up in the capital, The Industry’s timing could not be more apt. Covering hot topics and hard issues, Dylan was interviewed by Sarah Penny––editor of Fashion Monitor––and offered straight-spoken advice on the media industry and exclusive insight into the inner workings of the bourgeoning men’s market.

The Industry Members get an insight into Dylan Jones’ world at GQ.

Industry insiders such as retail entrepreneur Harold Tillman, Industry advisor and Harvey Nichol’s consultant Frances Card, founder of eponymous denim retailer Donna Ida Thornton, principal of the Condé Nast College Susie Forbes, director of Fashion Scout and Graduate Fashion Week Martyn Roberts, super blogger Navaz Batiwalla of Disneyrollergirl, jewelry designer Sarah Angold and Candid Magazine’s Joshua White and Danny Keeling made up the audience. Other familiar faces included blogger, Ella Catliff of La Petite Anglais, Sapphires Model Management founder Neely Reyes and Hoxton Radio founder David Harris. Attendees enjoyed a monochrome sweets buffet from Sugar Tables London complete with #INDxGQ hashtag printed cupcakes. The entire event was filmed for IND-TV by The Industry’s film partner, RUN Productions.

Discussing the rise of London Collections: Men and his ascent to the top of the GQ masthead, Dylan told members that in order to succeed, you need two things: work ethic and luck. He told the audience, “You need to work harder than you ever have in your life and you need to be lucky at a young age – and I was lucky, that’s how I got into the industry.”

“15 years ago it would have been very difficult to put a man on the cover because it wouldn’t have sold,” explained the editor, who pioneered the introduction of high-end designer editorials, luxury lifestyle, and political content in the magazine. Fast-forward to 2015 and GQ is outstripping competition with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Benedict Cumberbatch gracing its covers. Menswear is rivaling the commercial worth of womenswear and fashion is a bigger business than cars: “Now everyone wants to be involved in the fashion world,” he said.

“I don’t see why men’s fashion week shouldn’t be as big as women’s fashion week in any city,” he concluded, explaining that London’s eclectic mix of fashion, parties, and dinners make it attractive to buyers flying across the world. He went on to say that “British menswear has the recognition of globally being the best in the world and we own every youth culture that has ever been invented––commercially I’d like to see that replicated.”

Representatives from Harvey Nichols, Browns, Candid Magazine, The Times, PHOENIX Magazine, Mayfair Times, Fashion Monitor, Celebrity Intelligence, Petrie, M&S and COS were also in attendance.

Shakira’s Second Baby…Next Big Fashion Star?

Featured Video

Shakira had her second baby with boyfriend Gerard Pique and named the baby boy, Sasha. The 37-year-old singer gave birth through cesarean section on January 29 10pm local time in BARCELONA, Spain. Proud grandfather, Amador Bernabéu, told reporters that the newborn looked just like his father, Gerard.

If Shakira’s first son, Milan, is any indication, Sasha is going to be an adorable and fashionable baby. On Shakira’s website she said «the name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means ‘defender of mankind’ and ‘warrior’.”

On Thursday afternoon the couple slipped quietly into the Teknon Clinic hospital through a side door, passed reporters who were camped out since Tuesday for the celebrated occasion.

The couple has asked supporters and fans to donate to UNICEF as a baby shower gift, like they did for baby Milan back in 2013. With the money donated two years ago over 80,000 children were vaccinated against polio because of the efforts.

Before the birth, Shakira said, «Now that we are soon welcoming our second child we want to help other children around the world and also contribute to a long-lasting solution for getting children living in extreme poverty the supplies they need to survive.”

Sasha Piqué Mebarak is the latest baby to join the ranks of fashionable celebrity children, following Christina Aguilera’s newborn daughter, Summer. Celebrity children are changing the game, and we can’t wait to see what Sasha will bring to the table.

Olivia Pope is Back for More Scandal

Featured Video

Scandal fans, rejoice! For all those anxious to see what happened to Olivia––or catch another glimpse of shirtless Scott Foley––the long wait has ended, as “Scandal” returns for its mid-season premiere. While the plot is thicker than ever, I can’t help but wonder how the perfectly pressed Miss Pope ever allowed herself to be caught with such Scandal-ous hair. However, all is forgiven thanks to her superb performance as she craftily escapes her kidnappers using her bra’s underwire.

Kerry Washington plays stylish Olivia Pope on Scandal

Thanks to Olivia’s quick thinking, we’re in for another dose of Scandal’s nail-biting drama and high end fashion––at least, for the rest of the season. For Olivia Pope’s style fans, that means more Guccis,Valentinos and Pradas for us to behold.

While Olivia Pope is certainly becoming one of the fictional world’s hottest style icons, Kerry Washington’s own style is not far behind. Compared to Olivia’s professional, Amal Clooney-ish flare, Kerry Washington’s style is more adventurous and colorful. However, Kerry always pulls off her more daring choices, and lands herself on the red carpets’ best dressed lists. Fortunately, with “Scandal” in full swing, both Olivia Pope’s and Kerry Washington’s fans will have more chances to get style tips from their favorite fashion icons.

What-to-Wear: Super Bowl Party

The Super Bowl is just around the corner and my inbox is overflowing with invites that demand things like ‘put on your best game face’, ‘show your team spirit’, or just simply ‘RAGEEE’. Needless to say, football is not exactly my cup of tea but every year, like clockwork, I am inevitably coerced into watching the Super Bowl.

While I have absolutely no interest in the Super Bowl or football, I am interested in Super Bowl parties. Somehow, endless amounts of pizza and free-flowing cheap beer make all of the excess testosterone worth it; so I show up, eat carbs, and cheer when everyone else does. I’ve learned from years of experience that pretending to care about the game is a lot easier than explaining to a bunch of ‘stoked’ football bros why I find the sport so uninteresting.

The trick to fooling football fans is to dress like a football fan, so this week’s “What to wear?” is for my readers who are struggling to make football fashionable. Look good this Super Bowl Sunday and look like a fan with this touchdown ready outfit.

1. Varsity Jacket

Stand out in a sea of ill-fitting jerseys and terrible color combinations in this playful, fashion forward take on the varsity jacket. Yellow and black are two colors that actually work together, while the varsity fit gives off the illusion that you may be interested in sports. Everyone will be too busy fist bumping or face palming to notice that you’re jacket doesn’t represent a team at all. This varsity jacket is by Married to the Mob and is available here.

2. Oversized Tank

An oversized tank nods to the traditional sports jersey without being too literal. Pick a neutral color to dress down the varsity jacket while still maintaining an ‘athletic’ aesthetic. Wear with a lace bralette peeking out to keep the look feminine. This tank is by Helmut Lang and can be bought here.

3. High-Waisted Shorts

High-waisted shorts are just casual enough to hang with football fanatics while being cute enough to save you from the head shakes of fashionistas. Bonus: the high waist will also hide the fact that you’ve been eating all of the pizza and drinking all of the beer during the game. Woops. These shorts are vintage, but a similar pair can be found here.

4. Flatforms

I’ve learned from experience that anything that resembles a heel will be mercilessly made fun of during this sacred football event. Louboutin or Payless, football fans could care less––unless you’re talking linemen and pig skin. That being said, I’ve learned how to get at least an inch of lift while still maintaining the illusion of flats. Pick a platform, or flatform, and cheat your way to the top with these ‘flats’ by Dr. Martens. Buy here.

5. Don’t Forget!

An eye catching hand chain to cheer in when the game is finally over, and a colorful backpack to show off your ‘team’ spirit.

I may not know anything about football, but I do know a thing or two about dressing up and partying. Fake it ‘til you make it, and look cute while you chug beers with the bros this Sunday.

Happy fist bumping!

2015 People’s Choice Awards Bring Out Hollywood’s Finest

The 2015 People’s Choice Awards were held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The first big awards show of the year was hosted by Hollywood actresses Allison Janney and Anna Faris, who co-star in popular American TV show Mom.

All of the best and brightest stars in the industry turned up for the event including American comedian and television host Ellen DeGeneres, actresses Portia de Rossi, Kristen Bell, Sarah Hyland, Hillary Scott, Ginnifer Goodwin, Beth Behrs, Kat Dennings, Melissa McCarthy and actors Dax Shepard, Anthony Anderson and Adrian Grenier.

Actress Ginnifer Goodwin, who is currently starring in American TV series Once Upon a Time and was nominated for Favorite TV Duo with her co-star Josh Dallas said, “Oh my gosh, it sounds like such a cliché but I really mean it – these kinds of nominations mean more than anything because it’s our audience, it’s our fans, and so there’s nothing more fulfilling than that.” Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries actually walked away with that award.

Television producer Mark Bennett declared, “I always love the People’s Choice Awards. It’s always the first awards show of the year, and really sets the tone for what’s going to be happening with awards in a year.”

The show also featured musical performances by Lady Antebellum, Fall Out Boy and Iggy Azalea.

Topman Design Brings Seventies Chic to London Fashion Week

Popular British menswear brand Topman presented their latest collection on the runway during London Fashion Week. The Topman design autumn/winter 2015-2016 show front row featured a number of celebrities including Ben Haenow, who won the eleventh series of The X Factor in 2014, television presenter Dermot O’Leary, and fashion designer Henry Holland, who established his own brand House of Holland in 2008.

The Topman Design latest autumn/winter collection was led by the creative direction of Gordon Richards and his team, who showcased a wardrobe featuring elements of the ’60s and ’70s.

English male fashion model, Oliver Cheshire, perhaps better known to some as the boyfriend of English singer, songwriter and actress Pixie Lott, attended the show with actor and former model Douglas Booth.

“Well it’s menswear so it’s more personal for me,” said designer Henry Holland. “I just like coming to see the clothes, and shopping a little bit, and but also I think LCM is doing so well, and it’s such an exciting thing for London and London fashion and it’s really great to see what’s going on here,” he added. “We don’t do menswear yet so I’m kind of checking it out and seeing when might be the right time for us and things like that.”

London Fashion Week: English Charm for Spring/Summer 2015

During London Fashion Week spring/summer 2015 Topshop Unique, Burberry Prorsum, Mary Katrantzou, J.W. Anderson, Tom Ford, Sophie Webster, Thomas Tait, Paul Smith, Alasdhair Willis and Christopher Bailey showcased collections that will infuse the coming season with a breath of fresh air and energy. The collections exuded a new romance in the vein of the heroines from the great English novels, featuring soft, fragile and transparent tulle and organza tutus and dresses.

Christopher Bailey, chief executive officer and creative director said of his collection, “Throughout the whole show it was about these contradictions of something very, very strong with something very fragile.”

Mary Katrantzou was all about ultra-feminine pieces featuring incredible and complex embroidery, representing the origin of planet earth. “Embroidery was something that was part of my previous show as well, so it’s a continuation of that, but now it was more fun and it was more textured, it was less about an application of a motif and more about different textures and trims and something to connect different techniques together,” said Katrantzou.

Tom Ford’s models sported a rock and beauty look, with crimped hair and smoky eyes. The Tom Ford woman will be sexier than ever for 2015.

Freshness was expressed by the London socialite “It Girls,” including Suki Waterhouse, Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe,
Poppy Delevingne, and “Game of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner. British models Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne attended the Burberry Prorsum show.

With the slew of British talent shown during London Fashion Week, it is clear that English charm still remains.

In Bed With Sam Smith: One Night Stands, Homophobia, and Stardom

Featured Video

As the dust settles on the issue of royalties between Sam Smith and Tom Petty, Sam can rest easy and celebrate his upcoming cover feature on Rolling Stone magazine. In the cover story, Sam bares some intimate details about his sex life, his music, and the struggles he had to overcome because of his sexuality. With six Grammy award nominations, including Best New Artist, Sam Smith is the perfect example of achieving success despite adversity.

In a very personal interview with Rolling Stone, Sam Smith talks about falling in love with a straight boy in school, his experiences with anti-gay bullying, and struggling through the early part of his career before he began playing for sold-out audiences at Madison Square Garden. The Rolling Stone story shows that, despite all of his hardships, Sam Smith worked hard to be successful––and his success is phenomenal. His hit single «Stay With Me» topped the UK charts and has received Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. His album «In the Lonely Hour,» has also been nominated for Album of the Year, going up against his long time idol, Beyoncé.

Sam Smith’s music, as well as his story, make him an undeniable star. Judging from his Rolling Stone cover, he looks the part, too––regardless of what certain radio personalities may think.
