Feminism and Fashion: Sophy Holland is Changing the Industry

Sophy Holland is changing the fashion world by promoting feminism and equality in the industry. Males dominate fashion in all aspects, not just design, but behind the scenes and behind the camera. In Complex’s 50 Greatest Fashion Photographers Right Now 2012 list less than ten women made the cut and only one woman made it to Richest’s Top 10 Photographers in the Fashion Industry.

This gargantuan void in the industry is forcing the world to ask itself ‘how far have we progressed in womens rights?’ Sophy Holland wants to challenge these numbers and statistics.

Holland has already accumulated an assortment of high-profile publications (Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair) and brands (Swarovski, Chandon, Oscar de la Renta) as clients. Her secret is to shoot women as subjects, no objects.

Lying on the ground, standing on top of buildings, getting dirty, and carrying heavy gear, photography is a physically demanding art form and often times women holding the camera are accused of being lesbian or unfeminine. To combat this, Holland said, «I always wear makeup and style my hair for my shoots, [and] try to look as presentable as possible».

Following in the footsteps of her heroes, Annie Leibovitz and Ellen von Unwerth, Holland is inspiring and instilling confidence in women across the entire fashion industry.

Belstaff Biker Boys Rock and Roll Back to the 50s

The Belstaff autumn/winter 2015-16 mens collection entitled “Ton Up Boys” was introduced at London Collections : Men. The name “Ton Up Boys” was taken from the gangs of motorcyclists often known as “greasers” in the 1950s who enjoyed dancing to rock and roll and riding and living fast. The historic British brand is well known for its wearable jackets and motorcycle gear and more recently its crossover appeal into mainstream fashion popularity, which is a testament to the unrelenting cool of the leather jacket.

The presentation was held in an underground car park with vintage footage projected onto walls and the models straddling motorbikes and lounging in a recreated retro pit stop diner. Classic bikes and genuine bikers mixed amongst the fashion crowds with a suitably rock and roll live performance by UK band The Propellers.

The collection saw continued reinterpretation of the biker jacket, combining classic leather with other fabrics and featuring checkerboard racing flag designs as well as motifs and symbols reminiscent of the original bikers custom personalized logos and insignia. Fleece collars, roll neck sweaters and heavy knits brought softer textures whilst keeping the look classically masculine. Much like the original Ton Up Boys, the collection paid homage to the iconic male biker portrayed by Marlon Brando in the 1953 film The Wild One.

Coach Inc Makes a Shoe Purchase
American luxury group Coach Inc is set to buy luxury footwear brand Stuart Weitzman. The move is part of Coach’s ongoing strategy to move to the higher end of the market, with the purchase expanding its luxury shoe area to compete with fast growing rivals like Michael Kors and Kate Spade. The deal, valued at $574 million, has drawn some criticism from analysts who have said that the acquisition is an expensive distraction from the brands core handbag business. Critics noted that purchase was valued at twice Stuart Weitzman’s annual revenue over the past 12 months. Coach’s market share has suffered in recent years with a host of competitors eating into its market share in North America with more affordable and fashion forward handbags.
