Future Perfect — Visions of Fashion’s Future

Fashion design is a discipline constantly moving forward, striving to push the cultural zeitgeist and define new aesthetic paradigms. In 2014 a host of cutting edge designers looked to near future and science fiction to create vital and visceral imaginings of our fashion futures.

One of the most visually futuristic collections of the year came from flamboyant provocateur, French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. No stranger to depictions of an imagined future, Jean Paul Gaultier is known for his classic costuming work for Luc Besson’s science fiction film The Fifth Element. In his 2014 fall/winter collection the designer took inspiration from taut space drama Gravity in a collection that fused functional, futurist design with a chic punk aesthetic cast in a rigorously synthetic grey-green color palette.

German designer Philipp Plein’s spring/summer 2014 collection in Milan boldly used cutting edge
projection mapping technology. A moving projected backdrop of an underwater landscape created the environment of the show, which also featured a dramatic sequence where projections flawlessly mapped the contours and dimensions of his dresses depicting a sibilant aquatic world in stunning motion.

Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen is defined by her groundbreaking use of 3D printing and futuristic textiles created with MIT University’s materials department. Iris Van Herpen envisioned a powerful mediation of genetic research and the mapping of the human genome with her collection ‘Biopiracy’.
In a presentation that pushed at the boundaries of contemporary fashion design, her avant garde, architectural inspired use of silks and plastics, form defying shapes and dynamic juxtapositions of solid and transparent states went beyond superficial visions of the future to suggest how radically technology could reshape our contemporary aesthetics if we embrace its heady potential.

Girl Gang, Yeah!

After the madness of LC:M, it was extremely lovely to be invited to a top secret party to celebrate the brand new YouTube channel called Girl Gang TV. Girl Gang TV was created by platinum-selling artist and simply gorgeous style icon Kate Nash.

Kate Nash in her studio.

Kate teamed up with design house The Rodnik Band for the UK launch, which was held in the designer’s private home and design studio in East London. I was joined at the party by founder of Hoxton Radio, David ‘The Preshaah’ Harris, and fashion and celebrity stylist Rebekah Roy. We all sat huddled around Kate, who was perched on a dashing octopus bean bag designed by The Rodnik Band, and listened to her talk about her inspiration for Girl Gang TV.

Taking a selfie with Kate.

Girl Gang TV serves as a platform to share ideas and touches on everything from music and fashion to politics and business. Kate said, “I want to learn from other people and gain new perspectives on what’s happening in the world. I want to give voice to those that haven’t yet been given a microphone.”

Guests being captivated by Kate as she talks about her inspiration.

All of the guests were treated to a preview of the introductory episode of Girl Gang TV along with some beautiful acoustic music by Kate herself. Kate went on to say, «I’ve collaborated with The Rodnik Band before and love the concept of using art and humour to spread a message. Girl Gang TV is a global initiative and we believe in equal rights, human rights and animal rights and will use the arts and our creativity to spread our message and encourage others to do so too.”

I had the most brilliant time, after all, who doesn’t like pizza and girlie chats? I’m counting down to Girl Gang TV’s next episode––stay tuned!

Turner is loved for her stunning red locks and unexpected red carpet fashions. While we can’t wait to see her fighting villains in a leather catsuit, we can’t deny that her offscreen outfits are just as badass.

Sansa Stark’s damsel in distress days are over, just take a look at our slideshow for proof.

Johnny Depp Fails in Mortdecai, But Wins With Personal Style

Johnny Depp stars in Mortdecai, which is set to be released this Friday. In anticipation for his latest role, we are looking at Johnny Depp’s fashion through the years as he’s gone in and out of vogue. Lately Depp’s roles have been a complete turn off, especially when compared to the glory days of Edward Scissor Hands and Pirates of the Caribbean––also known as when he was still the subject of teenage lust.

Mortdecai is looking like a disaster, with Depp bumbling on screen like an idiot for 106 minutes. It’s becoming a common theme for Depp to play a dummy on the silver screen, evident in his recent roles in Into The Woods, The Lone Ranger, and Dark Shadows. The pattern of nonsense is painfully apparent. God, help this man get back to acting.

Besides acting, Depp has always been fashionable, setting trends and dating top models. Off screen he is still a fashion icon.

You’re Wearing Your Scarf Wrong

Fashion and function are always colliding. Scarves are one of those garments that straddles the line between disaster and refined styling. The difference all lies in how you wear it. Celebrities have stylists to help them with the nuances of dressing, but not all of us can hire a stylist. That’s why Fashion One is here to help.

Scarves can take a boring outfit to the next level. When in doubt, pick up a scarf. For inspiration on how to tie your scarf, check out the slideshow above!

Tom Ford, Gigi, and Strawberries and Cream

Whilst I adore strawberries and cream on a sunny day, preferably whilst watching tennis at Wimbledon… there’s another place red and white also fill me with excitement. Yes you guessed it, that is on my filming rail ready to be worn on screen!

I’m a little bit in love with my outfit from episode 107 of Fashion Frontline. I loved it so much that I thought I’d share a few candid behind-the-scenes snaps and some sneaky tips on where you can snag the look. After all, there’s nothing more glamorous than red lipstick and a statement necklace. It’s an easy look to pull off and can suit many occasions. From a wedding to casual work drinks, this look will keep you looking effortlessly stylish at any function.

Details of my outfit.

Let me know what you think of the outfit and episode. This week we’re talking all things Gigi Hadid, Tom Ford, major changes to Maison Martin Margiela, Indix, Academy Awards nominees, and much much more! Press play to watch below.

I’m finding Gigi Hadid’s rise to fame incredibly fascinating to watch. She’s gone from a relative ‘nobody’ to one of the worlds most talked about models in the space of one short year. Not only has she fronted campaigns for Guess and Tom Ford, but she’s also being compared to modelling royalty like Adriana Lima and Chisty Turlington with her new Maybelline role. Nothing cements your place on the catwalk quite like a comparison to those supermodels! I definitely agree with the Company’s Global Brand President Jerome Bruhat when he says “As the fashion industry’s newest ‘it’ girl, Hadid is known for her confident, fun, seductive spirit. She reflects our brand values and represents Maybelline New York women all over the world who are smart, sexy, optimistic and full of life.”

As for the outfit itself: the dress is from Portmans, jewelry is by Colette, shoes from Novo and I’m using MAC makeup. Share your versions of this outfit with the tag #FashionOneLook on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Vince Camuto Dies of Cancer

The fashion world said goodbye to another fashion icon this past Wednesday when Vince Camuto, celebrated shoe designer, passed away. Vince Camuto died inside of his home in Greenwich, Connecticut surrounded by his wife and five children. He was 78.

Vince with his wife, Louise, in 2014.

It was a long battle for the fashion god, but his family said that he went peacefully. Camuto is known for having founded the Nine West footwear line and will live on as a legend of setting footwear trends.

Vince was born and raised in New York City and lost his father when he was just two-years-old. He began his career in fashion at the young age of 18 by handling customer complaints at I. Miller. In his mid-30s he partnered with Jerome Fisher to found the Nine West Group in 1978. Nine West went public in 1993 and was later sold to the Jones Group Inc. for $900 million in 1999. Through the 1970s and 80s Nine West was one of the leading footwear brands in America.

“I really listened and learned, especially from the women. They told you what they liked, what they didn’t like,” said Camuto on his humble beginnings in retail.

Known for being both fashion-forward and accessible, Camuto’s namesake brands are sold by major retailers across the U.S., in addition to 30 Camuto-owned specialty stores. The private company did about 10 percent of its business overseas last year, with stores in 62 countries, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, England, Ireland, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Israel, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, Australia and Canada, according to Women’s Wear Daily.

1940s Style Never Sexier in The Imitation Game

The Imitation Game is up for the Oscars Best Picture and Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley makes the period wardrobe fashionable and modern. Cumberbatch, most recognizable from his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock, has taken the dapper style from the 1940s to the present.

Sammy Sheldon Differ, the films costume designer, said “Mr. Cumberbatch tried on a series of sweaters and suits, then acted out scenes at fittings in search of the right combination of disheveled order.” Another challenge was designing something new and interesting for a time period that is already well-worn on-screen. So Ms. Sheldon Differ threw out old notions of what the period should look like according to the New York Times.

Keira Knightley co-stars with Cumberbatch in a wardrobe of knits, cardigans and cute hats. Ms. Sheldon Differ went on to say “We tried to find as much CC-41 clothing as possible,” the government’s label for rationed goods. She created three distinct outfits for each character, but kept Knightley’s wardrobes limited. “…you have to bear in mind that people didn’t have a lot of clothing (in the time period). If you had one good suit, you were well off. Most would make-do mend.”

Whether or not The Imitation Game wins an Oscar, Fashion One gives best dressed to Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch.
