Carrie Hammer Brings First Model with Down Syndrome to NYFW

Jamie Brewer, famous for her role in FX’s American Horror Story, made her debut appearance as a runway model at New York Fashion Week for Carrie Hammer’s show. The monumental occasion marked the first time a model with down syndrome walked the catwalk at New York Fashion Week. The show was appropriately titled ‘Role Models, Not Runway Models’ and featured clients of Hammer’s that included women of all heights, weights and ages.

Hammer is not unfamiliar to breaking the mold at New York Fashion Week. Last year, when she was invited to show her children’s line at the coveted fashion week she included a model, Danielle Sheypuk, who became the first model on the runway in a wheelchair. “We were never trying to make a statement,” Hammer said to TIME. “We don’t think of [Sheypuk] as being in a wheelchair. We don’t define her that way… but it went really viral. We got hundreds of emails from girls and their moms thanking us.”

Hammer hopes to take the ‘Role Models, Not Runway Models’ on the road to various national fashion weeks in the near future.
