Malaika Firth Wants to Stay Out of Fashion Politics

The beautiful young Malaika Firth is the first black model to land a Prada campaign in over 20 years, but she isn’t interested in getting into fashion politics. Despite her esteemed position that could play a major role in persuading the fashion world to see in more colors than black and white, Firth has opted to stay out of fashion politics and thinks we should ignore the issue of diversity all together.

The 20-year-old Kenyan born, London raised model said to the Telegraph, “The lack of racial diversity is a prevalent issue in modeling but I try to ignore it. If you talk about it and try to make it an issue, then it's still going to be there. I think a lot of people my age don't see the racism, and if we can just carry on trying to do better for ourselves, then I think it will be fine.”

Unlike her contemporaries, Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman and Joan Smalls, who are using their supermodel platform to speak out against the lack of diversity in the industry, Malaika Firth is keeping tight lipped about the entire situation.

Although it appears that there is some advancement in the industry with Rihanna fronting Dior’s latest campaign and the Prada win for Firth, the issue doesn’t just lie in the black and white, but is multi-faceted. Many people are still being underrepresented or not represented at all in the fashion world.
