The British Are Coming…to Hollywood! British Stars Take Over Vanity Fair

Annie Leibovitz shot Vanity Fair’s March cover for the magazine’s 21st Hollywood Issue with an old-school Hollywood look. Upon closer examination, however, the photo is cluttered with British stars including: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sienna Miller.

Redmayne is nominated for an Oscar for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Redmayne’s co-star, Felicity Jones, is also up for Best Actress in the same film. Cumberbatch is nominated for Best Actor for his leading role in The Imitation Game. The Americans’ are certainly up against some tough competition this year at the Oscars.

Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter said in the issue's letter: ‘We would have needed two issues to fully capture the breadth and strength of the British invasion. These are the people who invented the English language after all, and at no time does it come so alive as when they are speaking it. They certainly do better American accents than U.S. actors do British ones.’

Annie Leibovitz has photographed every Hollywood Issue cover, but three, since the first issue in 1995. The new issue will be available in digital editions and on national newsstands on February 5.
