10 Trends from NYFW To Start Wearing NOW

Spring is barely here but we’re already drooling over what’s in store for fall. Based on the latest New York Fashion week, we can expect a lot of plaid, capes galore, and pops of vibrant colors like orange and pink.

Though the clothes were shown in preparation for fall, stay ahead of the curve by implementing trends from NYFW now. See the slideshow above to fast forward autumn dressing into your spring wardrobe. You wore it here first.

What-to-Wear: ’90s Party

Earlier this week my friend invited me to a ‘90s themed soiree—and by soiree I mean a ‘90s-themed hip hop party at one of the largest underground (yes, literally underground) clubs in Tokyo.

Needless to say, I immediately did a mental scan of my closet. For those of you who don’t know, attending a party in Tokyo is no small feat. Surrounded by club kids, kawaii girls and everyone in between, it always seems better to be overdressed…and somehow I’m still always the most underdressed. So, in preparation for the upcoming soiree, this week’s “What to wear?” question is all about how to be ~tastefully~ ‘90s, while still standing out of the crowd. The ‘90s are making a comeback dude, and here’s how.

1. Flannel

A little Cobain and a little Twin Peaks, flannel was definitely a ubiquitous trend in the ‘90s. Though flannels have been revitalized by hipsters and other people with beards over the years, wearing a flannel buttondown still feels outdated to me. This mock “flannel” sweater nods to the ‘90s while still feeling on-trend and up-to-date. Wear oversized as a sweater dress to keep the look decade and nighttime appropriate. Buy here.

2. Bucket Hat

First made popular in the late ‘80s by LL Cool J, the bucket hat became one of the most defining accessories of the ‘90s and reemerged again early last year. So, why does this trend keep coming back? In addition to looking good on most anybody, the bucket hat’s unpretentious nature conveys a certain anti-establishment attitude that was appropriate then and is still appropriate now. Donned by everyone from Ghostface Killah, Hunter S. Thompson, and Rihanna, it’s safe to assume that wearers of the bucket hat could care less about what you think and are ready to party, hard. Find here.

3. Slip Dress

Rocked by ‘90s style icons like Winona Ryder and Liv Tyler and immortalized by cult films like Clueless and The Craft, the slip dress was a must-have in every ‘90s girl’s closet. Slip dresses can be sexy or sweet depending on what they’re worn with, but my personal preference is to wear them a little grunge-y. Layer under an oversized sweater, like the one above, for a look that Winona and Liv would both envy. This dress is available here.

4. Shoes

Whether it was a pair of Sketchers or New Balance, everyone in the ‘90s definitely had at least one pair of nondescript sneakers. Now before you go digging through your boxes of Beanie Babies and friendship bracelets, I’m going to veto Sketchers right now. This is one blast from the past that needs to stay buried in your closet––forever. Instead, try a pair of platform ankle boots that reference both ‘90s grunge and club kid culture. This particular pair can be found here.

5. Don’t Forget!

A see-through vinyl backpack to hold your flip phone, a Clueless worthy pen to jot down numbers on boys’ arms, and a tattoo choker to complete the look.

Taking inspiration from the ‘90s doesn’t mean that you have to be cliché or over the top, so leave the Rachel haircut at home. Instead, opt for pieces that tastefully nod to the era and accessories that are nostalgic––in a good way.

Happy Vogue-ing!

Men’s What-to-Wear: Goth Chic

It’s cold and gray outside and to match the weather, my mood has gone somber and my life’s soundtrack has been reverted to my Depeche Mode playlist. Along with these changes the darker colors of my wardrobe have become more pronounced. If you are in touch with the dark recesses of your soul, wave your black flag high and proud—this style guide is for you.

1. Motorcycle Jacket

Nothing says rock and roll like a motorcycle jacket. They keep you warm and can be worn year around. Distress, fur collars, wool linings, and zipper detail are ways to turn the classic into an original. Buy here.

2. Sleeveless Shirt

Bleach stains and moth holes give these otherwise standard shirts or tanks attitude. Keep the shirt looking vintage to let everyone know you are tough, but continue the dark color theme to look sensitive because everyone likes a bad boy with a sensitive side. Don’t over do the prints, this is a minimalist outfit and should be kept monochromatic. Buy here.

3. Moto Pants

Be careful not to over do the pants with excessive zippers or distress. If every article you wear looks beat up, then you might look like you got in a motorcycle accident. Try some wax, faux leather, or stick with the classic: denim. Buy here.

4. Leather Ankle Boots

First made famous by the Beatles, leather ankle boots have been reinvented as a goth-chic must. Everyone is rocking Doc Martens and combat boots, so try some heeled boots with a few buckles and belts instead. These shoes will give class to your outfit and make them appropriate for gallery openings and black tie parties. Find them here.

5. Last, But Not Least

The black rosary is a classic that keeps the outfit looking chic and put together. Thick, black framed glasses are essential, but make sure the lenses aren’t too dark because you will want to wear these inside. Lastly, it’s cold outside, but you’ll still need to access your iPhone. Leather fingerless gloves will do the trick.

LC:M DAY FOUR HIGHLIGHTS

I can’t believe its the last day of LC:M already! The last four days have just flown by and it has been the best season yet for me personally.

My day kicked off with the ‘Areas of Flesh’ runway by Katie Eary. For this collection Katie set the tone with the twisty, glossy work of her favourite contemporary artists Jeff Koons and KAWS. Koons’ ballon dog pieces are re-imagined as prints featuring organs, brains, rib cages and teeth all appearing on neoprene sweaters and hoods, t-shirts and shirts.

Jackets appeared on the runway in navy, orange, teal and aubergine whilst parkas had pink and teal fox trims accenting the hoods. Mohair and lambswool knits where heavily featured alongside matching hats and scarves. The highlight for me personally was the hunting hats with fur trims which just prove you can keep stylish and warm next winter.

After the excitement of my first catwalk I made my way over to the John Smedley static presentation. Inspired by the local Derbyshire countryside – home to John Smedley heritage since 1784, the collection showcased a modern take on the mining culture and Blue John – a stone found locally in the area. Pops of new colour ways include Inca Gold and Topaz alongside fresher tones of teal.

I ended my AW15 LC:M journey in style at Apsley House near Hyde Park. The bespoke taylors of Savile Row and The Woolmark Company presented the most wonderful pieces which showcased the modern face of British elegance. The presentation proved that London is the home to masculine style with its beautiful materials and first class craftsmanship.

Season six of London Collections: Men has established itself to be the very best one to date. With a vast array of great shows, presentations, events and parties the enthusiasm for LC:M has resulted in the event being extended by an extra day. It really is an incredibly infectious event with many designers now using London as a platform and is becoming ever more popular with designers who have previously shown in Milan, Paris and New York. This season we have seen the likes of Aquascutum, Manolo Blahnik and John Galliano showcasing at LC:M, proving that London really is the world’s capital of menswear fashion.

HOT STYLE PICKS FOR JANUARY

Knowing what to wear as a female can be extremely hard work. We all want to look great at all times, but with so many styles and options to choose from this can be a real challenge and can result (in my case anyway) in a mild panic attack.

Working in fashion I have to aware of the latest trends and I’m always on the hunt for the next must have piece to add to my wardrobe. When I was asked by online retailer Zalando to pick out some of my favourite looks from their designer brands from their upcoming sale, I was intrigued to find out more.

I went to take a peek at what Zalando had on offer and I was over the moon to get my hands on some of the below goodies. I was asked to create my ideal casual day and smart evening looks so I thought I’d share them with you below!

Looking good in January is always a chore, its cold, windy and you don’t know if the weather will stay the same from one moment to the next. I chose this cutesy dusky pink Markus Lupfur jumper with the slogan HEY BOYS! On the front as a winter warmer must have.

Not only will it keep you snuggly and looking good but its a bit of a head turner too. I teamed it up with an A-line cream leopard skirt by House of Hackney for a total contrast in colour and print. I’d wear this look with some little ankle boots and then your good to go and certain to get a few glances too.

For the evening I chose to keep it classy and covered up whilst still looking great. I fell in love with these Lulu & Co navy and black chinos, which are slightly high waisted meaning that there was only one option for the upper body – a crop top! This one is really fun from Bitching & Junkfood. The mesh detailing makes ensures you will stand out and look uber stylish at the same time – Winner.

Find your own dream outfits online now at Zalando.co.uk and just to let you in on a little secret, all these designer goodies are on sale right now… no need to thank me, just get shopping!

LC:M DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS

First thing on schedule for the third day at LC:M was a little morning visit to Joseph. The static presentation was held in style near Mayfair and did not make me regret the de-tour from the usual runway hotspots around Covent Garden. The AW15 collection was very relaxed, unfussy and casual. Combinations of flannels, nylon twill and jumbo pintripes give reference to the inspiration behind the collection – the artwork of Sean Scully. Deliciously wintery tones are heavily present with chestnut and textural greys alongside flecks of ecru and mineral themes.

I then tottered on down the road to see my first runway of the day at Richard James. Held in the BMW showroom on Park Lane the space offered wonderful lighting from the floor to ceiling windows. There was a bold reference to South America with ponchos galore with darting accents of blood red, fuchsia and burnt yellow capturing the vivid costumery of Incan heritage. This durable collection truly was beautifully crafted and one of my favourite runways so far.

Duchamp is known for having extremely fabulous presentations and this season’s certainly excelled itself. Set in the stunning Rosebud Hotel I was taken aback by the layout of the presentation and beauty of the hotel itself. The models where perfectly cast, and brought to life the classic menswear staples. Soft tailoring was presented through silm silhouettes and the use of statement milled clothes. Luxuorious 50-ounce English silk and Italian velvet dinner jackets created an air of opulence and showcased the oversided paisley and botanical prints. Absoultely stunning.

LC:M DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS

Here we are already at day two of London Collections : Men. Half way through the menswear scheduling and it feels like its only just really beginning to get in the swing of things.

My day began bright and early with a 7:30am call time for the Lee Roach show. As I made my way into the backstage area the scent of hairspray and cosmetic products hits you and the buzz is just electric. I was lucky enough to catch up with one of my favourite hair stylists – John Vial from Fudge. He was busy working his magic on the boys and getting them runway ready but still managed to give me a cheeky interview and stop for a selfie!

After getting the tips from John on hairstyling it was a hop, skip and a jump over to Victoria House ready to get a glimpse of the Lou Dalton collection. For AW15 I spied fitted gilets zipped onto fleece jackets and coats with the ever popular black on black colour palette focus. Lou collaborated with The Woolmark Company this season which resulted in some fantastic Thunderbirds cartoon strips printed onto fine Merino wool knits to celebrate the Thunderbirds 50th anniversary. It was here that I managed to grab some front row interviews with LC:M loyal supporters David Gandy, Oliver Cheshire and Tinie Tempah.

Second to last show at The Old Sorting Office was Oliver Spencer. Last season was incredible and I’ll be honest, after such an amazing runway I wasn’t sure how he could top it this year. Watching the collection unfold backstage I was confronted by an international music collective – The Turbans. They where providing the music for the event and the sound they produced was electric. Oliver excelled himself once again with divine fabrics that are soft to the touch made from alpaca, recycled cashmere and superfine lambswool. Charcoals and heavy greys are mixed with cream to imitate the effect of charred wood whilst accent bright colours and floral prints punctuate the collection.

LC:M DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS

Once again it’s here – the biggest menswear event in the London fashion calender – LC:M. It’s a new year and with a brand new season to look forward to I’m back to hitting the runways for Fashion One. This time round, LC:M has evolved into its first ever four day event and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in to see which trends the boys will be rocking in AW15.

I decided to wear this gorgeous tiger print dress by Just Cavalli thanks to the Zalando team.

http://www.zalando.co.uk

The day started in style at Somerset House where the International Woolmark Prize was taking place. With five amazing finalists, the judges — which included fashion icons – Paul Smith, Dylan Jones, Tim Blanks and Nick Wooster certainly had a tough decision to make. I caught up with the judges to ask about the process and how tough it really was…

After a three hour judging process, I managed to get my microphone infront of the Woolmark Prize winners – design duo Public School aka Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne. Born and raised in NYC, their collection was a reflection of the restless energy of the city in which they live and work. Suprisingly it was the first time they had experimented with wool – and as of today it looks set to become a strong part of their future.

Afterwards I nipped over to the gorgeous Aquascutum presentation which has been the first since the brand’s sale back in 2012. I got a first glimpse at the collection and whilst there are suits galore true to the brand’s original style you will find they have mixed it up to suit the modern man. Smart trousers are paired with basketball caps, divine two tone cottons – its clear to see its going to be a strong season. Should you want to see more of the collection take a walk on down to their three storey flagship on London’s Great Malbrough Street.

Last stop had to be of course Barbour. They remained true to their roots with classic wax bedale jackets proving that any gentleman can pull off the stylish and sturdy look all at once and has yet again the perfect trans-seasonal wardrobe staple items. This classic brand teaches us all the lesson that if it isn’t broke – don’t fix it!

One World Trade Centre Puey Qui.
